District Metered Areas (DMA): Prevent and Reduce Water Loss and Non-Revenue Water (NRW)
Experience the power of Smartrek Technologies as your greatest ally in the battle against non-revenue water (NRW). With our state-of-the-art monitoring solution, we help utilities understand where leaks and illegal connections are happening, allowing you to intervene before major breaks or costly illegal water usage. Smartrek also seamlessly integrates into your existing workflow, freeing up valuable time for your team.
How Smartrek Technologies Atrax monitoring solutions can help you?
By monitoring inflow and outflow, as well as pressure at the DMA’s entry points, detecting non-revenue water (NRW) becomes easier. This process also helps in understanding water flow patterns and normal consumption within the sector.
By monitoring instantaneous flow rates and pressures gives you immediate information on new leaks happening in your systems.
By monitoring abnormal variations in nighttime flow rates will indicate small leaks starting to happen, allowing you to intervene before it becomes a major burst.

The Design and Impact of District Metering Areas: Exploring Meaning and Function
To gain a better understanding of how a DMA and Smartrek work, let’s consider an example. When there is a small amount of water leakage within a large water supply system, it can be challenging to pinpoint the leak’s location precisely. However, if it appears in an area of typically low demand, the leak will likely be noticed, enabling corrective measures to be taken.
District-metered areas (DMAs) are widely used in some water systems to monitor any unusual demands commonly caused by leaks. A DMA design works by isolating a certain portion of the system and taking note of all inflows, outflows, and variations in tank volumes.
In order to gain a deeper understanding of water loss and locate places to apply resources, it is essential to evaluate water flow through the system by installing flow meters and dividing the system into DMAs. By doing so, DMAs that appear to suffer from water loss can be more vigilantly monitored and incorporated into water loss reduction programs.
Smartrek’s role is to take real-time flow and pressure measurements at the DMAs at regular intervals. This data is then compared to water consumption data from an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system and water flows from drinking water plants. If a plant detects a high-flow spike, Smartrek can determine which sector the flow is heading to and send a team to inspect for a possible water main break. Lastly, comparing data allows Smartrek to calculate the municipality’s total water losses accurately.
